Remembrance Day

(We have been very busy in Grade 1 establishing new routines and learning many new things! I am sorry that the blog that been on a bit of a backburner. Please stay tuned for more blog posts soon!)

Over the last two weeks, we have been learning about Remembrance Day. It is amazing what we have been able to comprehend as Grade 1ers!
Here is what we know about Remembrance Day, peace and war.

We started out by reading these books, A Poppy is to Remember and A Soldier’s Puppy. We especially enjoyed A Soldier’s Puppy. It was about a poor little girl who had to give away her puppy because she could not afford it. She needs money for food. A soldier who was going off to war said he would take very good care of the puppy, Freda, and return him when the war was over. The soldier saw a lot of terrible things in the war but Freda took good care of him, and essentially helped him survive. When the soldier and Freda returned from the war, they were no longer young. The boy was now a man and the puppy was now a dog. We realized this happened because the wars went on for a really long time. At the end, the soldier received a medal for his service, which he proudly gave to Freda.

We also watched this Charlie Brown video clip. It showcases the poem In Flander’s Field. We then illustrated the poem, using the clip to give us inspiration.

On Monday, we participated in a beautiful Remembrance Day assembly. There were lots of things that we noticed:

-          There were wreaths that had lots of poppies on them

-          Poppies were worn to help us remember the brave soldiers

-          There was a real soldier present and he had 4 medals

-          There was a moment of silence which we used to think about all of the soldiers who help keep Canada safe

-          There was a Canada flag and the band played O’Canada

-          We sang two songs about veterans and peace
Mrs. Hamilton (our Educational Assistant) also brought in some pins and medals that her father and grandfather received from serving in the war. We noticed lots of fine details on the pins and saw the different colours of medals. It was very interesting to see and hold real war objects! Thanks to Mrs. Hamilton for bringing those special items in.
